Anker Valley Report
9 competitors set off from Hereford for the Anker Valley Hasler race, all in Div 7, so Div 7 was guaranteed to have a decent turn out. 3 K2's and 3 K1's. This event saw the return of the senior Spencer’s racing for the first time in some xxx years, Lynn and John out to reclaim there spot at the top, Barry and Andrew out to make up the numbers.
For the K1's Bryony and Dave were looking forward to a good clean fight and Alison a little apprehensive in her first K1 race.
Arrival at Anker valley was a bit of a surprise, a large entry of 23 boats in the K1 event made for a frantic start, by contrast, 5 K2's (3 from Hereford) was a little less intimidating. The K2 event was dominated from the start by Kay and Tony with a flying start, Barry and Andrew working hard to pick up the tail wash with Lynn and John repeating the excersise for third. The other two were a little further down the field. A good clean scrap followed with some discussion as to how many bridges, where was the turn etc. As it happens the turn was nicely tucked away on one of the narrower parts of the canal so some frantic backwards / forwards, cutting and slicing was guaranteed. The return was led by Barry and Andrew with Kay and Tony close up on the wash.
One of the features of this event are the Barges with holiday makers, this proved decisive for Lynn and John (and a large number of K1's as the leading pair of K2's overtook a barge, the same barge was taken by the wind and succeed in partially blocking the canal, nearly pinching Lynn and John against the canal wall, as a result the result was skewed somewhat.
The K1's had a more dramatic start with Bryony and Dave testing the depth while Alison surveyed the carnage and tiptoed apologetically through. Dave and Bryony clearly motivated by there dip soon caught Alison and moved up through the field In many respects the K1's had the harder paddle as the water was very choppy due to the numbers and start order.
The finish saw the first promotions in Div 7 K2 at Anker valley for at least 6 years with both Kay / Tony and Barry / Andrew up to div 6, a surprise for both crews. Bryony recovered to finish 13th, Alison 20th and Dave came in 23rd. All in all an eventful day with 5 points for Hereford on the board putting Hereford in 9th place in the Midlands Hasler series.
